Dubai Metro Guide 2026: Routes, Stations & Tips
Complete guide to Dubai Metro for expats. Covers Red and Green lines, nol cards, fares, and tips for daily commuters.
The Dubai Metro is the backbone of public transport in the city. It's air-conditioned, affordable, and runs like clockwork. Whether you're commuting to work or exploring as a tourist, understanding the system will save you time and money.
The Two Lines
Dubai Metro has two lines that intersect at two stations:
The Red Line runs 52 kilometers from Rashidiya (near Dubai Airport Terminal 1) all the way to UAE Exchange and Expo City in the south. It's the main artery, passing through Deira, Downtown Dubai, DIFC, Dubai Marina, and JLT. This is the line most expats use daily.
The Green Line covers 23 kilometers, running from Etisalat in Deira through the historic Al Fahidi area to Dubai Creek. It's useful for reaching older parts of the city.
Transfer stations: Union and BurJuman connect both lines. Transfers are included in your fare.
Getting a nol Card
You need a nol card to ride the metro. Buy one at any station.
Silver card (AED 25) is what most people get. It comes with AED 19 credit and works on metro, tram, buses, and water buses. Top it up at machines or online.
Gold card (AED 25) gives access to the Gold Class cabin at the front of the train - more space, leather seats, and usually emptier. You pay double the standard fare.
Red ticket (AED 2 + fare) is paper-based and works for 1-2 journeys. Only worth it if you're visiting briefly.
Blue card (AED 70) is personalized and allows auto top-up. Get one if you're staying long-term.
Understanding Fares
Fares depend on how many zones you cross:
| Journey | Silver/Blue Fare | Gold Fare |
|---|---|---|
| Within 1 zone | AED 4 | AED 8 |
| Within 2 zones | AED 6 | AED 12 |
| All zones | AED 8.50 | AED 17 |
For unlimited travel, daily passes cost AED 22 and monthly passes AED 350.
Operating Hours
The metro runs every day, but hours vary:
Saturday to Wednesday: 5:00 AM to midnight Thursday: 5:00 AM to 1:00 AM Friday: 10:00 AM to 1:00 AM (late start for prayers)
During peak hours (7-9 AM and 5-8 PM), trains arrive every 3-4 minutes. Off-peak, expect 7-8 minute waits.
Cabin Types
Each train has three cabin types:
Standard cabins (middle cars) are for everyone. These get packed during rush hour.
Women and Children cabin (front car) is reserved for women and kids under 12. Men get fined AED 100 for using it.
Gold Class (front section of first car) requires a Gold nol card. Worth it during peak hours.
Key Stations for Expats
Dubai Airport Terminal 1 & 3: Direct metro access. Terminal 2 requires a bus connection.
Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall: Exit here for Downtown Dubai, the Dubai Mall, and the Burj Khalifa.
DIFC: Financial district. Many offices within walking distance.
Mall of the Emirates: Direct mall access. Ski Dubai is here.
Dubai Marina: One of the most popular expat areas. The tram connects here via DMCC station.
Union & BurJuman: Transfer between Red and Green lines. BurJuman has a large mall attached.
Metro to Airport
The metro is the cheapest way to get from the airport to most parts of Dubai. From Terminal 1 or 3, the Red Line takes about 35 minutes to reach Downtown (AED 6) or 55 minutes to reach Dubai Marina (AED 8.50).
Note that DWC (Al Maktoum International Airport) has no metro connection - you'll need a taxi or bus.
Rules to Know
The metro is strict about rules, and inspectors do check:
- No eating or drinking (AED 100 fine)
- No smoking (AED 200 fine)
- Keep feet off seats (AED 100 fine)
- Tap in and out - failing to tap costs AED 200
Large luggage, bicycles (except foldable ones), and pets aren't allowed.
Tips for Daily Commuters
Avoid rush hour if you can. 7-9 AM and 5-7 PM are extremely crowded on the Red Line, especially between DIFC and Marina.
Stand on the right side of escalators. Left side is for people walking past.
Download the RTA app. It shows real-time train arrivals and lets you plan routes.
Check last train times. Missing the last metro means an expensive taxi ride home.
Connecting to Other Transport
The metro connects to Dubai Tram at DMCC station (change for Marina and JBR). It links to buses at most major stations - transfers are free within 30 minutes if you use the same nol card.
