Whether you're buying a new car, transferring ownership, or renewing your registration, dealing with the RTA is part of life in Dubai. This guide explains the processes, costs, and what to bring.

    New Car Registration

When you buy a new car from a dealer, they handle most of the paperwork for you. You'll need to provide your Emirates ID, passport copy, and proof of insurance (minimum 13 months coverage).

The dealer submits the documents to RTA and you receive your plates, usually the same day. Total fees run AED 420-570, covering registration, plates, ownership certificate, and administrative charges.

If you're financing the car, the bank will require a No Objection Certificate (NOC) before registration, and they'll typically hold the registration card until the loan is paid off.

    Buying a Used Car

Transferring ownership of a used vehicle involves both buyer and seller:

The seller needs to cancel their insurance (they'll get a refund for remaining months) and clear any outstanding fines. If the car is financed, they need an NOC from their bank.

The buyer needs new insurance (13+ months) before the transfer can happen. If the vehicle is due for inspection, it must pass before transfer.

Both parties visit an RTA service center together - or use the RTA Dubai Drive app for a digital transfer. The fee is AED 350 plus any inspection costs.

    Annual Renewal

Every vehicle in Dubai must be renewed annually. The process depends on your car's age:

Vehicles under 3 years old don't need inspection. You can renew online through the RTA app with valid insurance. It takes minutes.

Vehicles 3 years and older require an annual inspection at a Tasjeel center before renewal. Book online to avoid queues.

Renewal costs about AED 370-400, plus inspection fees if applicable.

    Vehicle Inspection

Inspections happen at Tasjeel centers in Al Barsha, Deira, Al Qusais, and Warsan. They're open 7 AM to 9 PM.

    The inspection covers:

    • Exterior: lights, mirrors, wipers, body condition
    • Interior: seatbelts, warning lights
    • Mechanical: brakes, suspension, steering
    • Safety: horn, tires, emissions

Cost is AED 120-150 for standard vehicles. If you fail, you pay AED 35-50 for a re-test after fixing the issues.

    Common Reasons for Failing Inspection

Tinted windows that are too dark get flagged. Dubai allows 50% tint on rear windows, 30% on front sides, and none on windshield (except a strip at the top).

Modified exhausts must be removed or returned to original specs.

Worn tires - tread depth must meet minimum standards.

Cracked windshields in the driver's line of sight fail. Small chips elsewhere may pass.

Warning lights on the dashboard indicate problems that need fixing first.

If you know your car has issues, fix them before the inspection. Failed tests mean return visits and additional fees.

    Required Documents

    For any registration service, bring:

    • Emirates ID (original)
    • Valid insurance certificate (13+ months for new/transfer)
    • Previous registration card (for renewal/transfer)
    • NOC from bank (if financed)
    • Passport copy (for new registration)

    Online Services

The RTA Dubai Drive app handles most registration needs:

    • Renewal (for vehicles not needing inspection)
    • Fine payment
    • Appointment booking
    • Status checking
    • Insurance upload

You'll need to log in with UAE Pass. Plates can be delivered to your home for a small fee.

    Number Plates

Standard plates are included in registration fees. Special numbers cost extra - low digit plates and recognizable combinations go for thousands (or millions) of dirhams at RTA auctions.

Plates stay with the owner, not the vehicle. When you sell, you keep your plates and the buyer gets new ones.

    Fines and Black Points

Outstanding traffic fines must be cleared before renewal. The system won't let you proceed otherwise.

If you've accumulated 24 or more black points, your license gets suspended. This must be resolved before you can drive or renew registration.

Check your fines through the Dubai Police app or the RTA app.
