Every residence visa applicant in the UAE must pass a medical fitness test. It's straightforward, but knowing what to expect makes the process smoother.

    What the Test Includes

The standard visa medical screens for communicable diseases:

Blood tests check for HIV, Hepatitis B, and syphilis. A small sample is drawn from your arm - takes a few minutes.

Chest X-ray screens for tuberculosis. You'll change into a gown, stand against the machine, and hold your breath briefly. The whole thing takes under a minute.

Basic physical exam covers blood pressure, height, weight, and a general health assessment.

Women of childbearing age also receive a pregnancy test. Pregnant women are exempt from the X-ray (bring a gynecologist certificate).

    Where to Go

Government centers (DHA Medical Fitness Centers) are located in Al Muhaisnah, Al Rashidiya, Al Quoz, and at DHA headquarters in Oud Metha. They're open Sunday to Thursday, typically 7:30 AM to 9:30 PM.

Private centers include Aster, Saudi German, and other DHA-approved clinics. They cost more but offer shorter waits and VIP services.

Your employer or PRO may specify which center to use. If not, choose based on location and convenience.

    What It Costs

    ServiceCostResults
    Standard processingAED 250-3204-5 working days
    Express (48-hour)AED 370-4302 working days
    VIP same-dayAED 550-7504-6 hours

Most employers cover the cost. Pay by card, cash, or mobile wallet.

    What to Bring

    • Original passport with valid entry permit or visit visa
    • Passport-sized photos (2-4)
    • Emirates ID application (if applicable)
    • Payment method

Your PRO or employer should provide any additional reference numbers needed.

    How to Prepare

Fast for 6-8 hours before your appointment for accurate blood test results. Water is fine - stay hydrated.

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand. It can affect liver function results.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You'll need to change for the X-ray. Avoid dresses or jumpsuits - separates are easier.

Remove jewelry and metal accessories before the X-ray, or leave them at home.

If you take prescription medications, continue taking them normally and mention them to the staff.

    The Process

The entire visit takes 1-2 hours, depending on crowds:

    1. Registration - Present documents, pay, receive a reference number
    2. Blood draw - Quick and routine
    3. X-ray - Change, position, done in minutes
    4. Physical exam - Brief assessment with a physician

You'll receive a reference number to track results. Most centers send SMS notifications when results are ready.

    Getting Results

Results are sent to the immigration system automatically. Your employer or PRO will be notified to proceed with visa processing.

You can also check status through the DHA app or website using your reference number.

The medical fitness certificate is valid for 3 months. If your visa processing takes longer, you may need to repeat the test.

    What If There Are Issues

Inactive TB (old scarring) often shows on X-rays. If you've had TB before and it's fully treated, bring previous medical records. Additional testing may be required to confirm it's inactive.

Active TB typically results in visa rejection. You'd need to complete treatment and reapply.

HIV, Hepatitis B findings affect visa eligibility, particularly for certain jobs (healthcare, food handling). Policies have become slightly more nuanced, but these remain serious flags.

Other conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes generally don't affect visa approval. You're being screened for communicable diseases, not general health.

If you're rejected, an appeal process exists. Consult with your PRO or an immigration advisor about options.

    After You Pass

Once cleared, your visa processing continues to the next stage. The medical is just one step - expect:

    • Emirates ID biometrics
    • Visa stamping
    • Labor card (for employment visas)

The whole process from medical to completed visa typically takes 1-2 weeks if everything moves smoothly.
